A fascinating exhibition of historic samplers, each a unique carefully embroidered creation by its maker, will be on public display at Honeywood Museum, Carshalton from Saturday 5th March.
The Stitches in Time exhibition will showcase the skill and dexterity of talented needle-workers. Many of the items on show date from the 19th century and some were created by children as young as 10.
The collection is not usually available for public viewing. The public has a rare opportunity to enjoy these unusual artefacts until Sunday 22 May.
Admission to the Stitches in Time exhibition is free.
Cllr Jill Whitehead, Chair of the Environment & Neighbourhood Committee at Sutton Council and Councillor for Carshalton Central, said:
“The Stitches in Time exhibition is an unusual and rare opportunity to see examples of historic embroidery and sewing. It’s incredible to see the intricacy and detail of these items.
“There’s no better place to enjoy this exhibition than the beautiful Honeywood Museum, one of Sutton’s most valuable heritage landmarks.”
Needlework samplers dating from as long ago as 300CE have been found across the world. The earliest European examples date from the 16th century, but it was in the 18th and 19th centuries that the art-form really caught the imagination.
The Stitches in Time exhibition is just one of the exhibitions planned for Honeywood Musuem. Visit the Friends of Honeywood website here to find out more about the great events still to come in 2016.
