Applications to represent Sutton at 2016’s London Youth Games are open until April 29.

Sutton Council is looking for people aged between 11 – 17 and who live or study in the borough to represent Sutton in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games 2016.

There are an exciting range of disciplines for which athletes may try out. The events include: Angling; Aquathlon; Archery; Athletics; Paragames athletics; BMX; Cycling; Diving; Football; Handball, Judo; Netball; Rowing – indoor; Swimming; Water-polo and Weightlifting. Applications for all these disciplines close on Friday April 29 and application forms can be downloaded from the Sutton Council website here.

The Council is also looking for team managers to help young athletes prepare for the games. Managers ideally should have Level One or Two coaching qualifications in their chosen sport, good communication skills, and most importantly enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge of the sport. The events will take place between May and July so managers would need to be available in those months.

To help keep events running smoothly, volunteers will also be needed to help out at training sessions and assist team managers. More information about how to apply can be found here.

Cllr Jill Whitehead, Chair of the Environments and Neighbourhood Committee at Sutton Council, said:

“The London Youth Games are a great way for young athletes in the borough to showcase their talents. Sutton is traditionally a strong contender across a range of disciplines and I wish everyone who tries out this year the very best of luck.

“I’d also like to thank those who give up their time to volunteer as team managers, support staff, and stewards. The London Youth Games couldn’t happen without them.”

The Balfour Beatty London Youth Games is an annual Olympic style event which involves all 33 London boroughs and is now part of the nationwide School Games programme. It has been a stepping stone for many Olympic stars, including the borough’s very own David Weir.

In 2015 the borough took first place in mixed Badminton, female Judo and female Squash. This year Sutton aims to include as many local young people as possible as it continues to compete against 33 other boroughs.
