Sutton residents invited to hear plans about new borough secondary school

Sutton logo big full colourSutton Council is inviting residents to attend an information evening to hear about plans for a new borough secondary school.

The event is at 7pm on Thursday 15 September 2016 in the Aitken Hall at St Andrew’s Church, Northey Avenue, Cheam, Sutton SM2 7HF.

Back in March three educational providers put in bids to the Department for Education (DfE) to open a new secondary free school in Sutton by September 2018, with the Sutton Hospital site in Belmont identified as the preferred site.

Sutton Council is in the process of preparing a planning application for the new school, which it intends to submit in early October.

The three potential providers are Cheam Academies Network, Harris Federation and the Diocese of Southwark. All are proposing a fully comprehensive, non-selective, secondary school and sixth form, for up to 1,275 students aged 11 to 19, with six forms of entry.

At the information evening residents will hear about the proposals for the new secondary school, including the final building designs, the landscape strategy and transport assessment.

This event will start with a presentation sharing the final proposed design of the secondary school. An exhibition will run until 9pm and will highlight how the design has evolved throughout the consultation process.

Cllr Wendy Mathys, Chair of the Children, Families and Education Committee at Sutton Council, said:

“Sutton has some of the best schools in the country and there is an increasing demand for school places due to the rising number of children in the borough.

“A new secondary school is needed to ensure that every child in Sutton has a school place. We would encourage residents to attend this meeting so that they can see and hear what is being planned to make the new school a reality.”

A decision on the preferred provider is expected to be made by the Department for Education shortly.
