Vacant site to be used for new council housing

Sutton Council plans to use a vacant site on Fellowes Road, Carshalton to develop new council housing following an ongoing search for development opportunities in the borough.

Over recent months the council has been looking at all possible land opportunities for new council homes including under-used garages and derelict sites, and last night its Strategy and Resources Committee agreed in principle that council-owned property on Fellowes Road will be used to increase its social housing provision.

The property is adjacent to Muschamp Primary School, in a mainly residential area of existing and new housing. A number of options are being explored for ways to develop the 3,500 square meter site which has the potential for 10 three bedroom houses.

Cllr Jayne McCoy, Chair of Housing, Economy and Business Committee at Sutton Council, said:

“Sutton, like the rest of London, is facing the problem of a lack of housing, so we are looking at opportunities to build homes wherever possible.

“Developing vacant sites like this is a step in the right direction and I look forward to seeing the plans take shape.

“We want to ensure that the new homes best meet local need and fit well into the area, so as the project moves forward and we develop proposals, we will encourage people to get involved with the designs for the new development.”
