Council calls for parents to ‘keep it real’ this nappy week

Sutton Council has called on parents in the borough to use Real Nappy Week 2014 (April 28 to May 4) as the chance to give cloth nappies a go over disposable ones, and help save the environment as well as hundreds of pounds off household shopping bills each year. If all families in Sutton used real nappies it could save the council up to £300k in disposal costs over a year.

To help parents along their way, Sutton Council is running a ‘cloth nappies cash back incentive scheme’ which offers parents who make the switch a cash payment of up to £35.

Amy Harris, Waste Strategy and Community Engagement Manager at Sutton Council, said:

“The cloth nappies cashback scheme is a great way for the council to help cash-strapped families, but is also something to help the environment too.

“Disposable nappies not only take hundreds of years to decompose in landfill, but they can also work out to be a lot more expensive for households than cloth nappies.

“The next time parents of Sutton are picking up nappies on their shopping trips, I’d encourage them to ‘keep it real’ and give cloth a go. It’s better for the environment and you could save a small fortune.”

Research by the Cloth Nappy Tree website shows that households could save over £1,000 by switching from disposable to cloth nappies.

Cost of using disposable nappies and wipes over 2.5 years = £1584.70

Cost of using washable cloth nappies and wipes over 2.5 years = £335

Saving: £1,249.70

More information on Sutton Council’s Cloth Nappies Cashback Scheme is available online.

Amounts awarded under the scheme:
