Galliford Try begins work on new offices in heart of Sutton

  • Firm appointed by Subsea 7; New offices have capacity for 780 jobs

Galliford Try has been appointed main contractor of a £39m office development in the heart of Sutton after the sale of a Brighton Road site was agreed by Sutton Council.

Developer Subsea 7 is overseeing the development of a new project office for the 1.36 acre site which will house up to 780 jobs in the south London borough.

Construction is now beginning on the new offices which are planned for completion by late summer 2016.

Subsea 7 is one of the world’s leading global contractors in seabed-to-surface engineering, construction and services to the offshore oil and gas industry. It is already one of the largest employers in the borough.

Subsea 7’s commitment to the borough was secured as a result of Sutton Council’s inward investment arm called Opportunity Sutton. The body is promoting sites for development in the borough and has attracted £322m of planned investment since it started almost two years ago.

Dave Williams, Vice President for Subsea 7 London (Sutton) office said:

“We are pleased to appoint Galliford Try as our contractor for this work. We are now keen to progress the construction of our new office and look forward to completing transfer of title for the site in the next few weeks. Through our ongoing consultation with the local community, we continue to work hard to create an exciting and sensitively designed building, which has the support of the local community and residents.”

Jayne McCoy, Chair of Sutton’s Housing, Business and Economy Committee, said:

“We are now seeing the physical results of our programme of inward investment. Soon Sutton will begin to feel the economic benefits of more jobs and transactions as a result of Subsea 7’s new offices.

“Through Opportunity Sutton, we have created a gateway for investors and developers to come to Sutton. The message is clear: Sutton is open for business. We are one of the best places in London to live, with a young, innovative workforce to match. “

Other developments, attracted by Opportunity Sutton, which have been given the green light by planners include: CNM Estates extending the existing Sutton Point building next to Sutton Station to a 22 storey high building, with two new buildings connected to it that altogether will offer deliver 300 apartments, a 130 bed hotel and shops and restaurants. The development could generate up to 750 jobs; LXB Retail Properties has been granted permission to build 186 apartments, a supermarket, shops, restaurants and a public plaza on an old gas works site off the High Street. The development is expected to generate 500 jobs.

In August, Sutton Council gave planning permission for the multi-million pound regeneration of a former industrial estate in Hackbridge called Felnex.  The detailed permission included 158 new homes, a cafe and energy centre, and a new food store.
