A general election has been announced for Thursday 8 June 2017. To have your say you need to be registered to vote. Candidates will be elected to represent the constituencies of Carshalton & Wallington and Sutton & Cheam in the Houses of Commons. Here’s all the information you need during the run-up to the election and on the day itself.
The deadline to register to vote in this year’s election is 11.59pm on Monday 22 May. You can register online on the Sutton Council website here, directly on the Government website here, or by calling Electoral Services on 020 8770 4179.
First time voters, who will be 18 on or before Thursday 8 June, can still register via the Sutton Council website after which they can be content that everything is awesome.
If you have moved house within the borough or have changed your name since 1 December 2016, please make sure you update your details with the Electoral Services team from this page.
You can vote by post if you are unable to make it to your polling station on 8 June – for example, if you will be out of the country on holiday or business. To do so you need to apply for a postal vote and can find information about doing so from the Sutton Council website here. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Tuesday 23 May. If you are going on holiday please call Electoral Services with regard to your dates on 202 8770 4179 to confirm you will be here when we send out your ballot papers.
You may also apply to vote by proxy if you cannot do so in person. You can find details from the Sutton Council website here. The deadline to apply to vote by proxy is 5pm on Wednesday 31 May.
You will have received, a poll card confirming the location of your polling station. You do not need to take your polling card with you to vote on 8 June. You will only be able to vote at the polling station indicated on your card.
There are 98 polling stations in Sutton, which will be open from 7am until 10pm. The count will take place at Westcroft Leisure Centre and the results will be announced from 4am onwards on Friday 9 June. The results will be released on the Sutton Council website as well as via our social media channels.

Q. How do I find out where my polling station is?
A. Your polling station will be shown on your polling card. You will only be able to cast your vote at the polling station on your polling card. You can also check using the website Where Do I Vote?
Q. Do I need to take my polling card with me to the polling station?
A. No – as long as you are registered to vote and can give your name and first line of your address you will be able to vote. You will be issued with a ballot paper that you can take to the polling booth and mark your ballot paper as instructed
