The Mayor of Sutton Cllr Jean Crossby said:
“It is with great sadness that we have received the news of the passing of former Sutton Councillor and Mayor Lal Hussain MBE.
“Councillor Hassan served as Mayor between 2000 and 2001, and spent a further four years between 2002 and 2006 as Councillor serving the residents of the borough.
“Lal Hussain was extremely active in our community, particularly in the Wallington area. He was the Secretary of the Muslim Cultural and Welfare Association of Sutton until his death on Wednesday 31 May.
“It is a tribute to the generosity of Lal Hussain MBE that as recently as 2010 he and his wife Abida packed up 55 food boxes to be distributed amongst those caught up in the 2010 Pakistan floods.
“I’d like to extend our condolences on behalf of everyone at Sutton Council as we pay tribute to a dear colleague, and offer our heartfelt sympathies to his family.”
